Circle Song

Lyrics

Circle round, hand in hand
Ring of faces, ring of stone
Gathered from across the land
We are many, we are one

Between the salt loch and the sweet
Ring of faces, ring of stone
Joining in the holy feast
We are many, we are one

Old ones rest near in the howe
Ring of faces, ring of stone
Where the sunset lights them now
We are many, we are one

Cold comes with the circling year
Ring of faces, ring of stone
About the ring the night draws near
We are many, we are one

Set a blaze upon the hearth
Ring of faces, ring of stone
Drive back darkness, bring us warmth
We are many, we are one

Drink and dance, sing out our names
Ring of faces, ring of stone
Dead and living, stones and flames
We are many, we are one

Circle round, hand in hand
Ring of faces, ring of stone
At the heart of all the land
We are many, we are one

Notes

This song was inspired by a talk at the neolithic stone circles in Orkney. The theory was that five thousand years ago this landscape was the setting for a midwinter festival of people from across the islands, bringing with them the bones of their ancestors (placed for the duration of the feast in the nearby chamber tomb Maeshowe).
